The Severance Middle School drama club invites the community to “Disney’s Newsies JR.” in May.

The production will run at 6 p.m. May 1-2 and 2 p.m. May 3 in the Severance High School auditorium, according to a Weld RE-4 news release.

“Disney’s Newsies JR.,” a 60-minute version of a 1992 film turned 2012 Broadway musical, is based on the true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City, the release said. The musical features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, and a book by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein.

“Disney’s Newsies JR.” follows a charismatic Jack Kelly, who rallies newsies across New York City to strike against the unfair conditions caused by the newspaper publishers raising prices.

Featuring classic songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day” and “Santa Fe,” the newsies learn “they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what’s right,” according to the release.
